Bute Agricultural Bureau met in the local RSL subbranch rooms recently.
The 16 attendees enjoyed a delicious dinner prepared by RSL members.
Results of the 2023 wheat crop competition, sponsored by the family of past member Bob McDonald, were announced.
Judge, Elders Roseworthy agronomist Michael Brougham declared Colin and Nathan Hewett the winners for an exceptionally clean crop that was very hard to fault.
Michael also talked about issues growers had to deal with during the 2023-24 season and advised chemical options for grass and weed control for the upcoming 2024-25 season.
He also reviewed some of the 2023 trial results and his report was supported by Elders graduate agronomist James Easter who had organised trials at Pinery.
Adelaide University Agricultural Students Association representative Emily Chambers asked the bureau members to consider helping fund a project to place copies of the Student Compendium in every high school library in the state.
Emily explained the compendium — a joint project of the AUASA and the Agricultural Institute of Australia SA Division — is a
valuable resource to show secondary students what opportunities exist in the wider agricultural sector and some of the pathways to achieve a rewarding career after studying ag.
She said, currently in the agricultural sector, there are six job opportunities for each student who graduates.
The bureau members allocated $500 from the field days disbursement fund for the AUASA project.
