Marcus Gibson, a graduate from Prince Alfred College, has been announced as the recipient of the 2024 Lois Harris Scholarship. This accolade celebrates his exceptional academic prowess and a deep-rooted passion for agriculture.

The Agricultural Bureau of South Australia has awarded Marcus $2,000, recognising his outstanding ATAR of 99 and his enrolment in the Bachelor of Agricultural Sciences programme at the University of Adelaide. The scholarship aims to encourage senior high school students to pursue agricultural studies at the tertiary level in South Australia.

Marcus grew up on his family's broad-acre farm in Dooen, Victoria, and completed most of his schooling at Ballarat Clarendon College before transferring to Prince Alfred College. "We are excited to see what he will achieve in his university studies and his future career in the agricultural sector." stated Janette Ridgway, Chair of the Agricultural Bureau of SA.

Upon receiving the scholarship, Marcus expressed his gratitude and excitement: "I am immensely proud and thankful for this recognition, which will significantly support my focus on my studies without the burden of extensive work hours."

Marcus also shared his outlook on the impact of his studies. "Agriculture is a growing field with tremendous potential for innovation, especially in sustainable practices," he remarked. "I am eager to contribute to this vital industry that has such a direct impact on our lives."

Currently enjoying the agronomy aspect of his studies, Marcus is open to exploring various agricultural disciplines, with a particular focus on chemistry and biology. He eagerly anticipates the diverse career opportunities that may arise as he progresses through his degree.

Marcus strongly advocates for agricultural science as a career path for high school students. "The field offers numerous opportunities for engagement and innovation, providing a rewarding and impactful career," he noted.

The Lois Harris Scholarship, named after Lois Harris who served on the Advisory Board of Agriculture from 1995 to 1998, provides financial support to a first-year student studying the Bachelor of Agricultural Sciences at the University of Adelaide.
